ABOUT THE WORK
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Painting and drawing are explorations. I’m not so much painting the objects as painting the reflected light. With transparent watercolor, light reflects back from the paper through the paint, in much the same way as stained glass. Art has been in my life from the time I painted with my grandmother and mother in Britannia Beach, BC, when I was about 7 years old. My mother Cleo Sneed studied with James Couper Wright in Pasadena and with Rex Brandt at the Brandt-Dike Summer School of Painting in Corona Del Mar, California. I graduated with a BA in Art from Mills College and immediately lived for a year in Paris, where I studied drawing while living at the Fondation des États-Unis, Cité Universitaire. Ultimately, I fell in love with watercolor painting as a student of Kenneth Potter, AWA, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, I’m painting with the East Bay Landscape Painters. I also try to draw every day. I may let the tools of the trade – Winsor Newton Transparent Watercolors, Arches 140 lb cold press 100% cotton paper, fresh water, various brushes – carry me away. But I have learned to feel when it is time to stop and let the painting have its way. Reality and I have to negotiate. I hope you enjoy the color, energy and life of the watercolors. May my artwork bring you joy.
