Description
I had the unique opportunity of spending a day high in the mountainous hills of upper Montana on a spring weekend. My good girlfriend Peggy told me about a live auction that was going to take place on an Amish farm. At the time Peggy and I were in Idaho and we drove for a day in order to be there early. Driving in the mountains with tall trees and dense forest everywhere we looked. Suddenly an opening appeared and we saw a barn, cars, people, carts, but we only cared about the BARN! Everything being auctioned was to raise money for the Amish families in the area. The Amish communities across the country had sent items to sell. We found seats in the packed barn and were given a photocopy of sheets, single spaced of a name, city/state, and name of the quilt. We were giddy with excitement. I thought I would buy a quilt or two but Peggy was a collector and many of the people in the barn owned big homes, some were collectors, some came from New York, Boston,Philadelphia to purchase. It soon became clear we needed a game plan as the special quilts were rare.
This leaf quilt when it was “whipped out” over the showing beam, high above us, caused a gasp in the crowd and the bidding was fierce. I don’t know what came over me but I had to have this quilt. At the end of the day, exhausted, and picking up our quilts (Peggy 8, Ann 3), a crowd of people came up to me and congratulated me on the purchase. They all said the artistry and workmanship was well known and to expect this piece to only gain in value. It gives me great pleasure to offer it to you.
