The Broken Spoke

The year was 1964 and James White opened the Broken Spoke out on South Lamar in Austin, Texas, in a dirt parking lot underneath a big oak tree. One of the last of the true Texas dance halls.  It has standard honky-tonk decor - rec checkered tablecloths, low ceilings, pool tables, neon lights (everywhere) and a dance floor right through the middle. Everyone comes to have a good time. Cowpokes, city clickers, hipsters, alternachicks, tourists, and techies. James White says it is all about showing people a good time in a safe, family-friendly atmosphere. "It doesn't matter if you are a millionaire or a ditch digger, all can have a good time at the Spoke." Just remember to wear your boots. Honky Tonk - 2 Steppin' - Country Music - Read ... read more

Michael Gross – #FOCUSYOURSELFIE

Michael Gross is a fascinating man. But you don't need me to tell you that - the New York Times bestselling author, who has spent more than three decades covering fashion and fashion photography is adding another page turner to the stack: FOCUS (which hits stores July 5th), 740 Park, Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women, Rogues' Gallery, House of Outrageous Fortune and Unreal Estate - all books that keep the reader mesmerized (the famous who are in the books and the rest of us who just love all things fabulous). I had a chance to to ask Michael a few fun facts: Does he have a favorite destination (considering he works as a travel writer). "My favorite place is an empty, medusa-free beach. And my favorite city is Rome."  A ... read more

Scooteroma Tours

My darling husband and I spent a few days in Rome and we wanted to experience Rome in a way that felt new, young, and vibrant. To see the historic city through the eyes of a resident. I found Scooteroma Tours via word of mouth. After reading about Annie (a native Minnesotan) and Giovanni (born and raised an hour from Rome in Fiuggi) I knew we had found kindred spirits. Annie had worked in NY in fashion and fell in love with Italy...you can ask her about their love story. We were picked up by two dashing young men from our hotel and immediately started racing around Rome and the countryside as if we were just another set of young (at heart) couples off to meet up with friends. We were seeing traditional sites but also sites not in the guide ... read more
